As the executive orders pile up and President Biden seeks to distance his administration from President Trump’s, he should be careful to preserve and learn from the things Trump got right.
One such positive legacy is the work of Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz on improving services for people with serious mental illnesses. McCance-Katz resigned in early January after almost four years as the first assistant secretary for mental health and substance use and the director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which runs point on federal mental-health policy.

In late December, following several weeks of dynamic negotiations, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (the Act).
1 The massive legislative package includes appropriations through September 30, 2021, $900 billion in supplemental appropriations to address COVID-19, a ban on surprise billing, extensions of expiring health programs and an amalgam of odds-and-ends health policy provisions.
The Act contains several key Medicaid provisions, including a delay in Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) allotment reductions, new Medicaid supplemental payment reporting requirements for states and codification of non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) rules, described below.

WEST BLOOMFIELD The topic of mental health is receiving more attention than perhaps at any other point in history.
The pandemic has brought the issue to the forefront, and mental health providers have been given resources to help tackle the problem.
According to a press release, community mental health providers across the state and in Oakland County have been providing residents with comprehensive behavioral health care through Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics grant funding.
