Six VEX robotics teams from three School District of Manatee County elementary schools are headed to a regional competition, making history for the district.
Millage details
Manatee County residents approved a 1-mill property tax increase for the School District of Manatee County in March 2018. The vote was 28,949 in favor (51.38%) and 27,392 (48.62%) opposed.
The district expected the additional millage to generate $37 million per year to go toward operational needs.
The 2020-21 School District of Manatee County budget is $879.12 million.
The referendum will be on the ballot once again Nov. 2.
The teams are made of students from Gilbert W. McNeal, Robert E. Willis and Virgil Mills elementary schools.

Nearly five years after emigrating from Nigeria, Afuke was within reach of realizing two major goals.
The certified nursing assistant was studying to become a nurse in the United States. Afuke’s exam was scheduled in June.
She also had completed the requirements to become a United States citizen and had an important interview in April that was postponed due to the emergence of the Coronavirus.

Spring classes are starting up on April 6 at the Davis Adult and Community Education School and there’s still time to register online.
Available community interest classes include Hapkido Self-Defense and Stress Reduction, Tibetan Meditation, Beginning Spanish Conversation and Hatha Yoga. Also available is English Reading and Writing, a class for Parents of English Learners and a New World of Work workforce preparation class.
Additionally, there are classes for adults to complete the requirements for a high school diploma or General Education Development credential. The adult school also carries English as a Second Language classes.

This summer, Lompoc Valley Medical Center’s skilled nursing facility, the Comprehensive Care Center, is offering a free Nursing Assistant Training Program. The educational effort is a way to give students a diverse and comprehensive education and, if desired, provide a career path to nursing.
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course includes eight weeks of intensive classes and training. Students are paid minimum wage while attending classes. The course is expected to run June 29-Aug. 20.
Applicants must be high school graduates and at least 18 years old, and successfully complete Lompoc Valley Medical Center (LVMC) reference and background checks. If chosen for the program, applicants must complete a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug screening, and provide documentation of ability to legally work for LVMC.
