Playing With Produce raises funds for Washington Elementary Playing With Produce raises funds for Washington Elementary Throughout the month of April, the Arkansas Local Food Network and Bernice Garden will host “Playing with Produce: A Family-Friendly Fundraiser,” a series of virtual cooking classes to raise funds for after school and summer cooking and nutrition classes for students at Washington Elementary (2700 S. Main St.). Events will be held on Thursday nights in April from 6-7 p.m., a press release states. Tickets for each event are $40 and can be purchased here. NMSU STEM Outreach Center to apply for federal funds to support programs

The STEM Outreach Center at New Mexico State University intends to apply for a five-year grant to continue and extend support for school districts in Doña Ana County, Grant County and Hidalgo County beginning in the fall. The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center grant would support the development of after-school programs in Las Cruces, Hatch, Gadsden, Silver City, Cobre and Lordsburg school districts. These programs provide academic support and enrichment opportunities to support literacy and science, technology, engineering and math learning designed to reinforce topics introduced during the students’ traditional learning day. The grant is offered to high need schools through the New Mexico Public Education Department through the national 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. Karen Trujillo was a dedicated educator, highly competent and diligent, and she had a heart that never neglected the human side of whatever was going on. For two years her professional life was a roller-coaster. A teacher and NMSU administrator, she started 2018 as a newly elected county commissioner; within weeks, she was appointed and unanimously confirmed as New Mexico’s education secretary, but within months she was back home just when the school district needed her, having fired its previous superintendent. February 25, 2021 From the School of Education Dr. Chris Godwin, director of teacher education and associate faculty member in the Professional Education department, was presented the School of Education’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is presented annually during the School of Education’s Spring Convocation; however, due to the pandemic, this event was cancelled, and the award was presented to Dr. Godwin virtually last fall. In 1984, Godwin earned a bachelor of science degree in intermediate education with a concentration in math and science with Summa Cum Laude distinction. He continued his education at Campbell and graduated in 1986 with a Master of Education and school administration certification. He began his teaching career in Harnett County Schools, serving as a middle grades teacher, assistant principal and academically/intellectually gifted coordinator.
