April 20, 2021 The Century Town Council was unable to conduct business Monday night after three members skipped their meeting. Council president Luis Gomez, Jr. and Seat One member Dynette Lewis were present Monday night, but three members must be present for a quorum. James Smith, Jr. Leonard White and Sandra McMurray-Jackson were not present. No reason was given for their absences, but NorthEscambia.com later learned that Jackson was ill. “I apologize when the public and the press has more initiative to come out then the council,” Gomez said. “There’s nothing I can do. April 6, 2021 Monday night’s Century Town Council meeting was a bit unusual in that the council did not vote on anything, except ordinary acts to pay the bills and approve previous minutes. The council heard updates on items including the Community Action Program and the Charter Review Committee during a meeting that lasted well over an hour, but there were no action items on the regular agenda. The council barely had a quorum with two members absent; Leonard White and Sanda McMurray-Jackson did not attend. Mayor Ben Boutwell took part in the meeting by Zoom call due to an illness.

March 17, 2021 A month-long effort to find volunteers to help rewrite Century’s charter only produced one applicant, but the town isn’t giving up. The Century Town Council appointed an 11-member Century Charter Review Committee in August 2019 to explore the town charter the document that establishes the town, outlines its powers and spells out how it should operate. The charter has not been updated in almost 40 years, and that often creates problems in the operation of the town. The previous committee lost five members along the way, with just six people remaining. During an application period that ended March 4, just one person applied.
