Community center brings surge of activity to Merrillville

“I’ll see you in heaven.” It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life. Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday. Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization. Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation.

WATCH NOW: Southlake Mall s struggles part of broader retail woes, may require reimagined space

HOBART — Southlake Mall, the focal point of retail in the Region for nearly a half-century, is being managed by trustees and facing foreclosure in Israel, where owner Starwood Retail Partners owes $145 million in debt from a recent refinancing. Now managed by Pacific Retail Capital Partners, the two-story mall at U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street has suffered from some major vacancies — such as the Carson s and Sears anchor stores after those department store chains went bankrupt. It has been operating with restricted hours since the coronavirus pandemic started. More than 12,000 Hoosiers have died from COVID-19 since March 2020. There are real names, faces and human stories behind that staggering number. This Sunday, The Times partners with 11 Indiana news agencies to share the stories of dozens of “Hoosiers We’ve Lost” in a special print section and online presentation. Watch for it Sunday.

a- One correlation I’ve long remarked upon is between sprinting speed and criminality. Back in 1982 I was entering the Century Mall in Chicago when a black youth holding a stolen item dashed by, closely pursued by two Mexican security guards. As they raced north on Clark Street, the black kid’s superior speed put distance between him and a trip to the police station. On the other hand, 19-year-old Antoine Watson probably wouldn’t have murdered the 84-year-old Thai guy in San Francisco if he didn’t generate so much velocity as he sprinted like an NFL cornerback blitzing from the blind side to knock the old man down.

Food and beverage tax bill for Hobart, Merrillville won t get a hearing but leaders still remain hopeful

The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Julie Olthoff, R-Merrillville, said the chair of the House Ways and Means committee, Dr. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville, told her he wouldn’t hear the proposal after Sen. Travis Holdman, R-Markle, informed him the Senate wouldn’t be hearing any food and beverage tax requests in this session.
