COLUMBIA, S.C. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and his wife have donated plasma to help patients who have COVID-19 recover more quickly from the disease.
McMaster and the first lady contracted COVID-19 in December and doctors encourage people who recover from the disease to donate the blood product. The plasma is then transfused into the bodies of current hospitalized COVID-19 patients to lessen their symptoms and hopefully help them recover faster.
The 73-year-old governor spent nearly two hours donating his plasma. Officials say it could help up to four COVID-19 patients. Red Cross officials say demand for the plasma has increased 250% since October.
Lori Torres was nervous about returning to teaching in-person in Chicago.
Torres, 47, teaches Spanish to all grades at her PreK-8 school and has a medical condition that puts her at increased risk for COVID-19, but her request to continue to teach from home hadn t been approved.
Her short-term concern was addressed when the Chicago Teachers Union voted to stay remote while union and city leaders haggled over the safety of working conditions in buildings.
But Torres long-term concern – getting a vaccine before she returns to Monroe Elementary School – is unresolved.
Chicago Public Schools vaccination schedule for teachers won t start until mid-February – and the district wants staff and students back before that. Some teachers in Chicago s suburbs, meanwhile, already have received vaccinations.
A strike in Chicago would provoke similar opposition across the US and join a global upsurge of educators striking against school reopenings in over a dozen countries.
