Firefighters thanked several passers-by who had helped by taking care of the puppies outside the store while firefighting operations were ongoing.
SINGAPORE - Firefighters rescued 19 puppies on Saturday morning (April 10) after a fire broke out in a pet store in Upper Thomson Road, near the planned site of the Upper Thomson MRT station.
Eyewitnesses said the puppies were carried out of the smoking store in boxes and a group of passers-by helped to hold and soothe the animals.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 197 Upper Thomson Road at about 1.15am.
The unit is occupied by Wellfond Pets. Its website lists another outlet in Tanjong Katong Road.

SINGAPORE: Puppies were rescued by firefighters early Saturday (Apr 10) morning after a fire broke out in a pet store in Upper Thomson Road.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at about 1.15am on Saturday to a fire at 197 Upper Thomson Road. Firefighters forced their way into the premises and extinguished the fire with one water jet.
SINGAPORE - An 80-year-old cyclist was taken to the hospital on Friday afternoon (April 9) after a road accident involving a bus.
The man was conscious when taken to Raffles Hospital. He was seen in pictures to be lying in front of the bus.
The accident happened along Boon Keng Road towards Bendemeer Road.
The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted to the accident at about 4.50pm.
Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that the man s bicycle was laden with cardboard boxes.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
