SINGAPORE - Retiree Lim Ee Chin had just watched the National Day parade on television when she spotted that her neighbour s flat was on fire at about 11.20pm and instinctively knew she had to do something to help.
Madam Lim, 81, braved billowing smoke to fill buckets of water in her bathroom and drag them across the living room floor to her front gate so her neighbour could douse the flames raging in the Block 917 Jurong West Street 91 flat.
Her willingness to help a neighbour in serious trouble came despite having a curved spine and heart trouble and the pleas from her sister whom she lives with to leave for her safety.

Singapore – Videos of residents spraying water from their balconies to help douse the raging fire at a nearby unit are circulating online, garnering praise from netizens.
On Saturday (Dec 19), six people were rescued, and about 100 nearby residents were evacuated from a fire that broke out in a condominium at Punggol. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the fire had “fully engulfed” a bedroom in a two-level unit on the 16th floor at the Waterwoods condominium in Punggol Field Walk.
It appears that before the SCDF arrived at the scene, nearby neighbours had tried to contain the flames by using hose reels from their homes.

A scheduled power shutdown during the wee hours of Dec 19 left some guests stranded and panicked, while others reportedly resorted to gathering outside the hotel due to poor ventilation in their rooms.
In a post uploaded onto Facebook last Friday (Dec 18), Wong ranted about how he was only informed of the hotel s scheduled power shutdown a couple of hours after he had checked in.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has donated 90 firefighting hoses to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), which will repurpose them for use in a new orangutan habitat in North Sumatra.
This is the third such donation made by SCDF to various wildlife organisations, as part of its efforts to “give new life to old firefighting hoses”, it said in a news release on Monday (Dec 21).

While most of us might hightail it at the sight of a fire, several residents in Punggol are gaining attention online for valiantly attempting to subdue a blaze in their neighbour s apartment.
The fire, which engulfed a two-storey unit at Waterwoods condominium on Saturday (Dec 19) morning, was eventually extinguished with a water jet, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed in a statement on Facebook.
But before the SCDF arrived on the scene, a group of residents had leapt into action, helping to hose down the affected unit, as well as the one above it, from two nearby balconies.
