People should act with caution after England’s Freedom Day to dampen the impact of an inevitable “exit wave”, the chief medical officer has warned. Professor Chris Whitty said there was “extremely wide agreement” among scientists that there will be an exit wave after all legal restrictions are lifted on July 19, a move the Government has now confirmed is going ahead.  He told a Downing Street briefing: “The slower we take it, the fewer people will have Covid, the smaller the peak will be, and the smaller the number of people who go into hospital and die.” However, he stressed there was “no clear evidence to suggest that a further delay to the end of lockdown restrictions would make a difference.
