Faster than Construction : World s First 3-D Printed School to Open In Madagascar FOLLOW US ON: The American philanthropist and founder of the Thinking Huts nonprofit, Maggie Grout, has come up with an innovative concept to help make education more accessible around the world: a life-size 3D-printed school. The first such school is due to open its doors in Madagascar. To bring this school project to life, Maggie Grout teamed up with the architectural design agency Studio Mortazavi, based in San Francisco. The pilot project will be built on the university campus of the Ecole de Management et d Innovation Technologique (EMIT), in the city of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar, and will welcome students from preschool through high school.

Designed by Studio Mortazavi, an architecture firm based in San Francisco and Lisbon, the school is a project of the nonprofit Thinking Huts, which aims to increase global access to education through 3D printing. This first iteration will be built later this year on the campus of a university in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar. With an exterior pattern based on Malagasy textiles and 3D printed using material from the local area, the building is both an example of advanced building technologies and a reflection of vernacular building styles.

The idea belonged to a Maggie Grout, who founded Thinking Huts at just fifteen years old in an endeavor to make education more accessible. Six years later, Thinking Huts and their partners, Hyperion Robotics and Studio Mortazavi, hope to be able to open the doors to the world’s first 3D printed school as soon as December 2021- pandemic allowing.
