The death toll from Tuesday’s explosion in an ice factory in New Karachi rose to 10 on Wednesday, while the investigators failed to ascertain the actual cause of the blast.
The powerful blast had destroyed the building structure, killing eight people, damaging two neighbouring industrial units and vehicles, bringing down the electricity supply and shattering the windowpanes of several houses in the adjoining residential block.
Though it was initially reported that the incident occurred after a boiler at the factory exploded, the factory management and the industrial association claimed that no boiler had been installed in the factory as ice factories did not require boilers. They said that it could be a compressor explosion, but all the compressors at the ice factory remained intact, and a gas leakage could have been the cause of the explosion.

The provincial government is taking corrective measures on an emergency basis to repair the faulty fire engines and overcome the shortage of staff at the Karachiâs fire brigade department, said Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Friday.
âIn my recent visit to the Central Fire Station near Karachiâs Civil Hospital, I came to know about the worrisome situation that only 14 fire tenders out of total 44 are operational in Karachi, while the cityâs fire brigade is also facing acute shortage of staff. Only two of the five snorkels available with them was found functional,â said the local government minister while addressing the 10th Fire Safety & Security Convention-2020 as the chief guest. The National Forum for Environment & Health organised the convention in collaboration with the Fire Protection Association of Pakistan (FPAP).

The Sindh High Court issued notices to the parties in Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan s plea against the carving out of a seventh district - Keamari - in the metropolis on Monday.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNA Aamir Liaquat also filed a similar petition before the high court.
The petitioners maintained in their pleas that the establishment of Keamari district and a related district municipal corporation was illegal.
They argued that a population census was not carried out in the area before changing its status to a district, adding that a public hearing to solicit public opinion on dissolving or creating a council is a requirement before establishing a district according to revenue rules.
Karachi be made a single district, suggests Mustafa Kamal

Pak Sarzameen Party chief Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that 95 per cent of the countryâs problems can be resolved by devolving the powers under the 18th Constitutional Amendment from the Chief Ministerâs House to the lowest level and by ensuring that a provisional financial commision (PFC) award be issued on the pattern of the National Financial Commision (NFC) award.
Addressing workers of the party through a social networking site, he said on Monday the solution to all chronic issues of Karachi lay in the PSPâs research-based and well-thought-out six-point feasible plan. âIf not today, then tomorrow, the only workable roadmap presented by the PSP will improve the current situation of Pakistan in the years to come, for sure,â he said.
