Hearing to set trial date delayed

Temporary closures at local emergency department, Emergency patients to be diverted to other South Zone hospitals

A number of temporary closures are still in effect for the emergency department (ED) at the Milk River Health Centre over the coming week due to physician absence.   The ED is currently closed and will begin accepting patients at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.   The ED schedule for the following week is as follows:  •Saturday, Jan. 2 – open 24 hours  •Sunday, Jan. 3 – open 24 hours  •Monday, Jan. 4 – open 24 hours  •Tuesday, Jan. 5 – closes at 8 a.m. and reopens at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7  •Thursday, Jan. 7 – open until further notice  These temporary closures are the result of physician scheduling conflicts and out-of-country travel. AHS will continue to keep the community updated regarding upcoming closures. 

AHS rolls out COVID-19 vaccine in rural Alberta, staff in Lethbridge now being immunized

  LETHBRIDGE Several hundred health-care workers in the South zone received their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday afternoon. Alberta Health Services (AHS) has set up 14 dedicated COVID-19 centres across the province, including ones in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Brooks and Pincher Creek. Carla Haney, an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse at the Chinook Regional Hospital, was selected to be among the first to receive the vaccine in the South zone. “I’m just grateful that I have to the opportunity to receive the first round of vaccines,” said Haney, who has been directly involved with the care of patients with COVID-19.

Trial date to be set in gang-style attack Poll Yes One of two youth charged in relation to a vicious gang-style attack on a teenage boy last year is expected to set a trial date when his matter returns to court in the new year. The boy, who can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with single counts of aggravated assault, resisting a peace officer and uttering threats, stemming from an attack last December. The matter was addressed briefly Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court, where the accused’s lawyer said a pre-trial conference will be held Jan. 11, and a trial date will be set Jan. 13.
