Australia joins UK, US statement expressing strong concern about media freedom in Hong Kong
The coalition of nations expresses strong concerns about the closure of Hong Kong s Apply Daily newspaper and urged Hong Kong and Chinese officials to respect and uphold freedom of the press. 10 July 2021
Australia has signed a joint statement with members of the Media Freedom Coalition expressing concern about the future of press freedom in Hong Kong and the arrest of journalists in the semi-autonomous city.Â
The statement, published by the United Kingdom and signed by 21 members of the coalition, said it had strong concerns about the closure of the Apple Daily newspaper.Â

The European Parliament has adopted a broad new resolution on Hong Kong, advocating tough measures be taken over the government s crackdown on the city s press freedom.
The 28-point resolution passed with broad support in the plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday (July 8), with 578 members of Parliament voting to adopt it and 29 voting against it; 73 abstained.
The vote followed a debate in which a procession of MEPs took aim at Beijing s tightening of the screw in Hong Kong, particularly in response to the closure of the Apple Daily.
