An estimated 8.7 million undergraduates enrolled in public, two-year colleges during the 2016–17 academic year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. A 2019 study from TD Ameritrade found 36 percent of Gen Z students considered attending a community college before a four-year college, while 21 percent considered attending a community college instead of a four-year college.

Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), today announced the WEDC is assisting Eau Claire County in launching a pilot program to test SpaceX’s Starlink, a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites that can provide high-speed internet in rural areas where broadband is limited or not available. The announcement comes as Gov. Evers continues to underscore the importance of expanding access to reliable, high-speed internet as part of declaring 2021 the Year of Broadband Access.The pilot project, which will provide high-speed internet to 50 rural homes and businesses, is being supported by a $27,500 Capacity Building Grant from WEDC, as well as funding from a group of healthcare providers including Marshfield Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Hospital Sisters Health System. (WKBT) Dairyland Power Cooperative and Chippewa Valley Technical College have partnered up to provide an education and training opportunity for Dairyland employees impacted by the upcoming retirement of the Genoa #3 coal-fired power plant. Employees who are interested in the program get the chance to train to become lineworkers within the Dairyland system. The class of employees taking advantage of the chance to transition to an in-demand career has just begun at CVTC’s Eau Claire campus. “Dairyland’s employees are our greatest asset,” said President and CEO Brent Ridge. “As one door closes, we wanted to do everything possible to provide for team members and create new opportunities for family-supporting careers in the energy industry.”

The college announced on Thursday, Dr. Sunem Beaton-Garcia will take over for Bruce Barker who is retiring. While Beaton-Garcia is the 11th president in CVTC s history, she is the first woman and Latina to hold the job, something she hopes will help further diversify CVTC. I am honored to have the opportunity to build upon CVTC’s great work in service to our students and the community as their next president,” Beaton-Garcia said. “It was clear to me during the search process that CVTC exemplifies the kind of commitment to student success and personal growth that inspired me to be an educator. I thank the district board for its trust in me and will work tirelessly to fulfill our mission.”
