Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for blood is more urgent than ever before. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have not seen a decrease in other medical problems that require blood transfusions, whether that be trauma, or ulcer disease, or cancers, said Dr. Eric Salinger, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center Chief of Staff. People still need to have blood transfusions as part of their medical treatment so they can continue to have healthy lives.
Police identify the man accused of hate crimes at a SLO hospital

The San Luis Obispo Police Department has identified the man who allegedly threatened a doctor and a patient at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center on Friday as Daniel Marcom, a homeless man who suffers from mental illness and addiction issues.
Before 8 a.m., a doctor treating Marcom asked him to be quiet, Marcom’s response was to threaten the doctor while using a racial slur.
Later, the 51-year-old Marcom became angry with the 77-year-old patient he was sharing a hospital room with, and unprovoked, Marcom brandished a knife and threatened to harm the man while uttering a racial epithet. Hospital staff then asked the police department to assist them.

A Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center patient armed with a knife allegedly threatened individuals at the San Luis Obispo hospital Friday morning, prompting the facility to go into a lockdown.
Officials placed Sierra Vista on lockdown for about 45 minutes, spanning approximately 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. SLOPD officers arrived at the hospital and arrested the patient with the knife.
No one suffered injuries during the incident.

UPDATE (6:05 p.m.) - The San Luis Obispo Police Department has identified the person who was arrested at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center on Friday as Daniel Marcom, a 51-year-old transient from San Luis Obispo.
Police say Marcom became angry with another patient with whom he was sharing a room, brandished a knife, and threatened him. Police say he also threatened the doctor that was treating him and uttered racial epithets at both victims.
Marcom was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats and brandishing a knife. He is in custody at the San Luis Obispo County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Twin Cities welcomed a baby girl at 3:20 p.m. on Jan. 3. The baby girl was 7 lbs., 11 oz., and 19 inches. The parents asked to keep the names private.
The first baby of 2021 for the county was a boy born at 12:54 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Tenet Health Central Coast’s Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and there was another New Year’s Day baby born there at 12:19 p.m.
