AstraZeneca searches for vaccines for virus-stricken Southeast Asia
Sun, 25 July 2021
Drugmaker AstraZeneca on July 24 said it was scouring its supply chain to find more doses of its Covid-19 vaccine for Southeast Asia, which is facing its most serious outbreak yet of the virus.
The statement from the Anglo-Swedish company – which produces its vaccine in Thailand for use domestically and in neighbouring countries – comes in the wake of a supply shortage which has sparked heavy criticism of Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s administration.
Under the terms of AstraZeneca’s agreement with Thai authorities, 180 million doses are due for production, one-third destined for the Thai market and the rest to be exported.

ASTRAZENECA Plc is “scouring” its global supply chain to try and boost Covid-19 vaccine supplies to Thailand and other countries in South-East Asia, its representative for the country said, amidst speculations of local production shortfalls.
The comments come after leaked letters showed last week that the drugmaker had offered to supply five to six million vaccine doses a month to Thailand, contradicting assertions by Thai officials that the government is owed 10 million a month and 61 million doses by end-2021.
