Selection of Korean pavilion curator for Venice Biennale embroiled in cronyism controversy

The selection of the curator of the Korean pavilion at the 59th Venice Art Biennale next year has been embroiled in a cronyism controversy, prompting the Arts Council Korea (ARKO) to make an unprecedented move to nullify its earlier decision and reevaluate all 12 applicants.
Last month, the council selected four candidates in the first round of the screening process, who then went through a second round of interviews. The four applicants were competing for the position to curate the Korean pavilion at the Biennale s International Art Exhibition next April.
For the first time, the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP) did the nomination, deliberation, and awarding processes of its triennial Thirteen Artists Awards online. Over 80 artists have qualified, all have taken their part in contributing to the progress of Philippine contemporary art locally and internationally. But as tradition dictates, the award has been given to 13 artists only all deserving of such recognition and now more eager to continue showcasing their distinctive art. This year s awardees include Allan Balisi, Nice Buenaventura, Gino Bueza, Mars Bugaoan, Rocky Cajigan, Geloy Concepcion, Patrick Cruz, Ian Carlo Jaucian, KoloWn, Czar Kristoff, Lou Lim, Ryan Villamael, and Catherine Sarah Young.

미술제도와 무관하게 자신의 내면에 몰입해 독창적인 창작을 지속해 온 발달장애 작가 16인, 정신장애 작가 6인의 작품 세계를 조망한 전시가 29일 개최됐다.
서울시립미술관은 올해 기관 의제인 배움 을 반영한 전시로 길은 너무나 길고 종이는 조그맣기 때문에 을 선보인다.
이번 전시는 정상·비정상, 장애·비장애 등의 이분법적 구분을 넘어 미술관에 대한 다양한 창작자의 접근성을 확대하고 서로의 삶과 철학, 예술성을 공유할 수 있도록 하고자 한다.

백현옥 인하대 명예교수 ‘제35회 김세중조각상’ 받는다

[여성종합뉴스]인하대학교(총장 조명우) 조형예술학과 백현옥 명예교수가 24일 오후 3시 김세중미술관에서 열리는 시상식에서 ‘제35회 김세중조각상’을 받는다.
백현옥 명예교수는 인체를 통해 인간애를 조형화하면서 인체 조형미를 다양하고도 일관되게 탐구해 독자적인 작품세계를 구축해온 점에서 높은 평가를 받았다.
심사위원단은 “(백 명예교수는) 1960년대에는 추상 조각을 탐구했고 1970년대에는 구상 조각으로 경향을 바꿔 현재까지 다양한 재료를 활용해 인체 조각과 환경 조각에 전념하고 있다”며 “그의 구상작업 속에는 인간과 자연, 어둠과 빛, 수직선과 수평선, 정중동 등 상반되지만 공존의 개념이 내재한다”고 평가했다.
