Victim Speaks to Press About Harassment by Seoul Mayor

March 17, 2021 12:44 The woman who accuses late Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon of years of sexual harassment spoke to select members of the press behind closed doors on Wednesday for the first time since he committed suicide last year. Park was found dead on July 9, a day after the victim filed a police complaint, and since then she had only been speaking through her lawyers or testified in court. The meeting with the press, in a hotel where no photography was permitted, took place less than a month ahead of the by-election to replace Park. It has set members of the ruling Minjoo Party party atremble because it hopes to hold the post despite earlier vowing not to field a candidate.

Lee Nak-yon, a potential candidate from the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), stepped down from his post as party chairman, Tuesday. Lee resigned as the DPK s internal regulations stipulate that a party member who plans to run in the presidential race must quit major leadership posts within the party, such as chairperson or Supreme Council member, at least a year before the election.
