GRAND FORKS A company with a large factory in Grand Forks is receiving attention after two planes collided mid-air Wednesday, May 12, near Denver.
Experts say the positive outcome of the collision was a combination of luck and advanced life-saving technology.
“It’s very rare for me to be able to say ‘midair’ and ‘no fatalities’ in the same sentence,” said Joseph LoRusso, a Broomfield, Colorado-based aviation attorney and commercially rated pilot.
The damage to the Metroliner s rear fuselage was in the “perfect location,” said Anthony Brickhouse, an associate professor of aerospace and occupational safety at the Daytona Beach, Florida campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
“If it was the flight deck: Bad outcome. The wings: Bad outcome. The tail: Bad outcome. It happened in the perfect place for the pilot to make it down,” he said.
1 plane deploys parachute, other lands safely after mid-air collision near Denver
ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) One airplane landed at Centennial Airport despite having a gaping hole in the fuselage, and another plane floated down to the ground thanks to a parachute safety system all after a mid-air collision Wednesday morning near Cherry Creek State Park.
South Metro Fire Rescue shared a picture of one Cirrus SR22 plane that deployed a parachute recovery system to drift down to the ground. According to SMFR, the SR22 and another plane collided midair, but there were no injuries.
Our partners at 9News found the other plane at Centennial Airport, a Key Lime Air propeller plane. Even with a large chunk of the plane s cabin destroyed, it was able to land safely.
