Unopposed candidates David Bruen and Darnelle Stinfort will become president and vice president of Syracuse University’s Student Association, respectively, the organization’s Board of Elections and Membership chair confirmed Friday.
Bruen and Stinfort still needed 10% of the SU student body to vote in the election for their victory to be legitimate. SA had recorded 10.2% voter turnout as of Friday, Board of Elections and Membership Chair Brendan Treloar confirmed in an email to The Daily Orange.

It is hard to believe that it has already been over one year since we, Justine Hastings and Ryan Golden, first announced our nomination for president and vice president of Syracuse University’s Student Association. It seems like just yesterday we were standing on stage at the Pride Union Drag Show Finals to announce our candidacy.
A lot has changed in the time since then, whether it be the worldwide pandemic, the national discourse that has inevitably made its way to our campus or the way we communicate broadly with students. But so much has also stayed the same.

The recent rise of anti-Semitism shouldn’t be ignored

It seems that my people have been forgotten once again. Anti-Semitism is not a topic that can be addressed in one column, so I won’t bother talking about everything that relates to this issue. However, I wish this country would hold anti-Semitism to the same standard that it holds racism and other forms of discrimination.
If the same energy were given to anti-Semitic hate crimes that is given to other types of hate, people such as basketball player Meyers Leonard wouldn’t have a job anymore. He recently used a common anti-Semitic slur while streaming “Call of Duty,” and his only punishments were a week-long suspension, a $50,000 fine and an apology statement that he was required to share. Football player Julian Edelman stated that he would educate Leonard about the word and anti-Semitism, and no one has said anything since.

After nearly a decade, Syracuse University’s Student Association could soon operate under a revised constitution.
The assembly on Monday unanimously approved several revisions to the constitution proposed by Parliamentarian Joshua Shub-Seltzer and the Organizational Review Committee. The updated constitution will now move to a referendum vote among the student body.
If implemented, the revised constitution will change election procedures. These changes include a second school-wide assembly election in the fall.
