Chandy, Chennithala meet church leaders, Surendran hold talks with Sabarimala tantri
As the pre-election scene hots up in the State, leading political parties are now cosying up to religious and caste organisations in Central Travancore region with an eye on the vote bank.
When the BJP’s Vijay Yatra reached Chengannur in Alappuzha on Thursday, party State president K. Surendran reached out to the family of the Sabarimala tantri, which holds a special place among the Hindu upper castes in Central Kerala.
During the visit, Mr. Surendran held discussions with Kandararu Rajeevaru, the reigning tantri (chief priest) of the hill shrine and congratulated him for taking an upright stance during the Sabarimala protests.

Sr. Preetha Varghese has been feeding hundreds of people living in poverty in the streets of New Delhi after her arrival in the Indian capital in 2016.
The 44-year-old member of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ, also called the Bethany Sisters, works for Prachodana Social Service Society, the social service wing of Gurgaon eparchy of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, one of the two Eastern Catholic rites in India. It is the youngest among 23 self-governing Eastern ritual churches in full communion with the pope, established on March 26, 2015, for the Syro-Malankara Catholics living in Delhi and surrounding areas.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Suddenly, the race is on among political parties to capture the goodwill, and thereby the vote share of Christians in Kerala. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the meeting with the Orthodox and the Jacobite factions of the Malankara church in New Delhi over the last two days to find a solution to the decades-long dispute, in Kerala, Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty has started reaching out to Christian religious leaders in a move to allay misconceptions, if any, of the community that League was dominating the Congress- led UDF.
