Rhea, Saturn s second-largest moon, is visible in the foreground, while the smaller moon Janus is pictured in the distance across the rings. Citizen scientist Kevin Gill recently processed this 10-year-old view of Saturn and two of its moons using calibrated red, green and blue filtered images captured by the Cassini spacecraft on March 28, 2010. On Dec. 23, 1672, Italian astronomer Giovanni Cassini discovered Rhea, Saturn s second-largest moon. Rhea is made up of rock and ice and is covered in craters.

This astronomical observatory was the brainchild of the solar astronomer George Ellery Hale. He was a professor at the University of Chicago who was famous for discovering magnetic fields in sunspots.  In 1889, two Harvard astronomers started testing out the observing conditions at Mount Wilson, but rain and snow damaged many of their instruments not to mention the clouds that blocked their view of the stars. They gave up on building the telescope, but they had already ordered the glass for the lens, so they gave it to Hale.

On This Day in Space! Dec 19, 1961: France creates a space agency

On This Day in Space! Dec. 19, 1961: France creates a space agency Space 19/12/2020 On Dec. 19, 1961, France s space agency was born!  After more than a decade of experimenting with rockets and missiles under the country s department of defense, President Charles de Gaulle finally decided that France needed an official governmental space research and signed the creation of the Centre National d Etudes Spatiales, which in English is the National Center for Space Studies. De Gaulle established the agency to coordinate French space activities like rocket launches and astronaut training and eventually the launch of the first and only cat to go to space.

On Dec. 15, 1612, the Andromeda galaxy was seen through a telescope for the first time by a German astronomer named Simon Marius.  The Andromeda galaxy (also known as M31) is the closest major galaxy to our own Milky Way, and it can be seen with the naked eye. Early astronomers thought it was a nebula, or a glowing cloud of space dust.
