Arts news: Upcoming dance shows, theater plans, talks and podcasts

Dance fans who have had to miss programs at The Yard in Chilmark because of the need to ferry to the island can experience some winter/spring programs presented virtually through the Martha’s Vineyard company. After the Yard’s 2020 season had to be canceled, new executive director Chloe Jones has set up a program to continue dance creation, performance and education this year “with a COVID-19 perspective.” There are several winter and spring events on tap for various ages and, behind the scenes, there will be residencies on and off the island to support new work. Programs are ticketed on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Proud Mary Theatre presents The Gayest Christmas Pageant Ever!

Spartanburg’s Proud Mary Theatre Company is celebrating Christmas with a production of The Gayest Christmas Pageant Ever! See what happens when a gay theatre company struggles to put on a Christmas show in this holiday program. The virtual production will stream Dec. 23 - 27. This is not a play for children, despite its similar name to the G-rated The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This off-Broadway hit was written by Joe Marshall, who has written several highly successful gay-themed plays. “One of history’s most noted gay writers Oscar Wilde is famous for saying ‘art imitates life,’” Director/Producer/Actor Sandy Staggs said. “And, this play is ironically a good reflection of Proud Mary Theatre. All we do are LGBTQ+ plays, and we have certainly faced challenges over the past three-plus years. And this pandemic has certainly not helped. Yet, we carry on and have still managed to produce some really great, well received shows.”

Salina High School South s Theatre Department moves production online

Salina High School South’s Theatre Department will present The Best Christmas Pageant Ever  online. Based on the bestselling book by Barbara Robinson, the story follows the outrageous shenanigans of the Herdman siblings, or “the worst kids in the history of the world,” as they take over the annual Christmas pageant.  The production was being rehearsed to have an in-person audience. Due to the increase in the COVID-19 cases in Saline County the production was recorded by Bill Weaver and can be viewed online at 2 p.m. Dec. 19, 7 p.m. Dec. 19 and 2 p.m. Dec. 20.  The comedy features about 30 cast members who have overcome getting wisdom teeth out, sickness, and being quarantine.
