What animal services officials think should be done with those who intentionally harm pets

SALT LAKE CITY Animal welfare advocates with Salt Lake County Animal Services are calling for harsher criminal penalties for those who intentionally injure animals after a dog was kidnapped last month and lit on fire. Dixie s Law, named for a 4-year-old red heeler that died days after getting taken by a family member s ex-boyfriend, would allow for enhanced penalties for premeditated animal abuse cases, said Salt Lake County Animal Services Director Talia Butler. And ideally, where there is time served by that person for the crime they committed, she said. It would also allow animal services to remove all animals from a home when an owner is found to have abused one animal, she said. Utah law now only allows the abused animal to be taken from the home.

Cat rescue calls on the community to help orphaned newborn kittens survive • Long Beach Post News

When unaltered cats of opposite gender can meet up anywhere, particularly during the warmer months that make up kitten season, it’s a yowling supershedder event. The felines produce numerous of litters, with an average of four kittens per litter and a few higher than 10. Female cats can get pregnant at 4 months old, and the kittens birthed by each cat can be fathered by more than one randy male. Females can give birth three or four times a year during an average three years of life for an outdoor cat and about 13 for an indoor cat (who should be fixed anyway come on!). The kittens will have kittens who will have kittens who will have kittens. Even if you don’t crunch the numbers, it’s a sad fate for animals who are in reality domestic pets whose ancestors had the bad fortune to be kicked outdoors.

Kitten season not a cute and cuddly time | Pets | independenttribune com

From Best Friends Animal Society What may sound cute to the general public causes a shudder every year among animal shelter staff across the country. “Kitten Season,” as it’s known in the animal welfare field, starts each spring and lasts through fall. Like the term implies, it’s the time of year when un-spayed female cats have most of their litters and animal shelters are inundated by orphaned kittens who need intensive care. “Cats can become pregnant at just four months old and the duration of feline pregnancy is approximately two months, so un-spayed community cats can have many litters in one season,” said Erin Katribe, veterinarian and medical director for Best Friends Animal Society.
