Brandywine Valley SPCA has partnered with Tangipohoa Parish Animal Shelter in Louisiana for a program that will help develop programs and infrastructure to help Tangipohoa increase its life saving rate. Part of the program is Brandywine Valley taking in dogs from the Louisiana shelter, including these puppies who will be put up for adoption at Brandywine’s Georgetown shelter. RYAN MAVITY PHOTOS

Part of the partnership is for Brandywine Valley staff to embed in Louisiana and to complete an empty shelter to relocate at-risk animals to where they are more easily adoptable.
ANIMAL WATCH-Prior to rescuing animals becoming big business, Los Angeles Animal Services and other municipal sheltering agencies focused on rescuing strays from the streets, investigating reports of cruelty, abandonment, or neglect;
assuring Pit Bulls were not being used for fighting and that animal-care laws were enforced by officers and shelter staff with the best training available. Now the emphasis is on saving every animal regardless of behavior or condition. Shelters became the enemy and emphasis was taken off holding pet owners responsible and placed on clearing the shelters.
This opened the world of rescue as not just as a humane act but as a full-time job. A legend in the wilds of Oak Brook, Rusty the stray dog captured hearts and eluded authorities during his years on the lam in the land of gated communities and office parks. When he finally gave himself up in January 2011 after more than three years on the run, the chow-sheltie mix needed treatment for heartworms.
With the help of fans such as Harry and RonDa Peters, who established a trust fund to care for Rusty, the 4-year-old dog recovered and was sent to the luxurious 3,800-acre Best Friends Animal Society sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. After his rehabilitation, Rusty found a permanent home with animal lover Kristine Kowal, who had moved to Utah from her home in Lake Zurich.

The Siskiyou County Humane Society is implementing new strategies to ensure lost pets get home quickly and safely, which allows them to keep the shelter free for dogs and cats that don t yet have loving homes.
The best way to ensure your furry friend will be returned to you if they re lost? Proper identification – including microchips or ID collars.
“People need to abolish the old school mentality, (that) losing a pet means you are a bad owner, and shift to the more enlightened attitude that things happen and, in many cases, are beyond pet owners’ control,” said Siskiyou Humane Society Executive Director Kim Latos.
