(WWBT) - Normally the Polar Plunge would see thousands flock to Virginia Beach in support of Special Olympics Virginia, but this year’s pandemic environment has things working a little bit differently. In lieu of a massive plunge at once this year, Special Olympics is asking supporters to plunge in their own ways. Cosby High School is using social media to raise money for the cause and spread awareness throughout its community.

This year’s Plunge will not happen in person. Instead, people get to “plunge their way” and decide how they want to take the plunge. Nancy Morehouse, Southwest Region Director for Special Olympics Virginia, said the change could attract a lot of first-time plungers who may have been wary of jumping into the New River in February for the annual plunge.

The 2021 Plunge will happen with a twist: instead of teams in the New River Valley and Roanoke Valley jumping into the freezing New River in February, each team will get to decide on a safe, socially-distant but still cold way to participate. The annual Polar Plunge supports the programs and mission of Special Olympics, which works to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
