BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inaugurated the Federal Government’s 18,000 Extended Special Public Works Programme (ESPWP) for youths in rural areas across the state.
The Extended Special Public Works Programme is an initiative of the Federal Government to empower 774,000 unemployed youths across the 774 Local Government Areas in the country.
The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Government House and Protocol, Mrs. Julie Olatunji, reiterated the commitment of the state government to support initiatives that would empower more youths in the state.
Noting that youth empowerment remains topmost priority for the state government, he said: “We have promised that more than 50 per cent of the youths will make up our new cabinet and we are committed to that. We have done a lot of programmes to empower youths, while other programmes are still ongoing to give others opportunity to be gainfully employed and empowered.”

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has reiterated the resolve of his administration towards effective implementation of the extended special public works programme in the state.
The Governor was speaking at the flagging off of the commencement of the Federal Government’s extended Special Public Works Programme held at the Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall, Bauchi, on Wednesday.
Bala Mohammed who was represented by the State Commissioner for Small and Medium Enterprises, Modibbo Ahmed, said that the state government is used to such programmes and is ready to support its existence and implementation in the state.

The 774,000 Federal government Special Public Works Jobs of the federal government will inject N780m into the economy of Nasarawa State in the next three months through the youth empowerment scheme.
The Nasarawa State chairman of the Special Public Works Programme, Dr Kasim Mohammed Kasim said at the flagging off of the programme Tuesday in Lafia that the Programme would not only boost the economic status of the but lift the youth out of poverty.
According to the state chairman of the Programme, “at the end of three months, each of the 13 Local Government Areas of the state would be injected with the sum of N60m”

Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, came under intense attacks from Nigerians after photographs of him distributing cutlasses and wheelbarrows to youths in Delta State during the launch of the 774,000 jobs in the state last week emerged on social media.
The federal government commenced the distribution of wheelbarrows, head pans and other equipment to unemployed youths as the Expanded Special Public Works Programme of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration commenced last week Tuesday.
Festus Keyamo officially flagged off the Special Public Works Programme, the 774,000 jobs for the South-South Geopolitical zone at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Asaba, capital of Delta State and the pictures of him delivering the equipment which went viral Monday sparked off public outrage.

Keyamo disclosed this in a tweet via his official Twitter handle on Monday.
His tweet read: “The 774,000 jobs is basically for our everyday labourers to carry out community services.
“It would not be financially prudent if the Govt were to spend billions for expensive equipment for 3-month jobs, then spend millions again training our labourers on how to use these equipment.”
Keyamo had last week revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the commencement of the Special Public Works Programme which would engage 774,000 unemployed Nigerians.
The programme was designed to employ 1,000 Nigerians from each of the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria was initially scheduled for launch on October 1, 2020.
