Lanka Looks for Indian and Muslim Support to Get Over UNHRC Hump 3 crucial decisions
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has urgently taken three major decisions with an eye on getting the support of India and the Muslim states in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva where a vote is to be taken later this month on a resolution castigating it for human riots violations and alleged war crimes.
For starters, Sri Lanka established a Secretariat for a Trilateral Maritime Security System which had been proposed by a conference of National Security Advisors at the instance of the Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in November 2020. The Lankan government had been dragging its feet on this issue, as it has good relations with China, the emerging power in the Indian Ocean with growing economic stakes in Sri Lanka.

Colombo (News 1st); Official sources have expressed surprise at the mention of the approval by the Indian High Commission to Sri Lanka with regard to the Public-Private Partnership with the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited on the West Container Terminal project of the Colombo South Port.
Sources stressed that the investments in Sri Lanka are purely decided by the Government of Sri Lanka and not the Indian High Commission.
On Tuesday (02), the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval for the proposal to develop the West Container Terminal of the Colombo with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ Consortium) and its local representative and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

After scrapping an agreement to develop a strategic East Container Terminal (ECT) at the Colombo port with help from India and Japan, the Sri Lankan government has decided to offer the West Container Terminal (WCT) to Indian and Japanese companies.
According to the Sri Lankan governmentâs department of information, the Lankan cabinet âhas approved the proposal to develop the West Container Terminal on Build, Operate and Transfer basis for a period of 35 years as a public-private partnership with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited and its local representative John Keels Holding PLC, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.â
