Natural England announces new National Nature Reserve for East Devon Pebblebed Heaths Natural England, in collaboration with Clinton Devon Estates, has announced today (Thursday 13 May), a new National Nature Reserve (NNR) for the vitally important East Devon Pebblebed Heaths near Exeter. From: The East Devon Pebblebed Heaths Photo: Jake Newman, Rekord Media East Devon Pebblebed Heaths, stretching between the village of Woodbury towards Budleigh Salterton on the Jurassic Coast, is the latest site in the county to join the UK’s list of nationally and internationally important landscapes. The management partners are the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust and the RSPB. A new board, under the chairmanship of Chris Woodruff, the manager of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, will guide and advise the partners in the management of the new NNR.

The payments were made under the €25 million Hen Harrier scheme funded by the Minister’s Department under the Rural Development Programme. The bonus payments, totalling €483,927 are in recognition of these farmers’ success in delivering habitats for Hen Harriers and other wildlife and they qualify for the bonus based on how well Hen Harriers are doing in their area

Overview The Severn Estuary and its wildlife is under threat from a proposal to build an enormous barrage to generate electricity from the Severn s huge tides The Severn Estuary is one of the largest in Europe and is one of its most important wildlife habitats. The estuary and the rivers which feed into it contain and support a wealth of wildlife so rich it is considered to be of international importance and is protected by international law. Its saltmarshes and mudflats are used by an average 74,000 birds each winter, its waters support more than 100 fish species and vast numbers of invertebrates. The estuary is a vital migration route for migratory fish, including Atlantic salmon, sea trout and eels.
