Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson and Republican Congressman John Katko, respectively the chair and ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, reached a deal late last week on legislation to create a bipartisan commission. The bill made two significant concessions to Republicans, as the panel would be evenly divided between members appointed by Democrats and Republicans and give the GOP-appointed commissioners veto power over any subpoena.

He has been a reliable Trump ally and helped engineer the ouster of Liz Cheney from GOP leadership. Despite his efforts, McCarthy faces skepticism among some caucus members and GOP observers. I m looking forward to being the Speaker in the next Congress, he said. Democrats currently control the House of Representatives by a slender 219-211 margin, and Republicans, buoyed by redistricting advantages that will play in their favor, sense that the majority they lost after 2018 midterm elections is easily within reach.

Donald Trump during his interview on Fox’s Hannity Friday night.  “Donald Trump didn’t need to sleep five hours a night,” McCarthy said while appearing alongside Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and newly elected House GOP conference chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY). “I kinda see Joe as a little bit out of it, well, a little bit more than out of it, a little checked out,” Sean Hannity remarked during the segment. “And I’m concerned that I am not the only one that sees it. As a matter of fact, everybody I talk to says they see it.” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks at his weekly press conference at the U.S. Capitol on January 30, 2020 in Washington, DC.
