House to vote on establishing January 6 commission amid growing GOP opposition

McConnell opposes bill to form January 6 commission ahead of House vote By Grace Segers House to vote on January 6 commission bill Washington The House will vote on legislation to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, amid growing opposition from Republicans who object to the proposed structure and scope of the panel. The bill, which was negotiated in part by a GOP congressman, is expected to pass with support from the narrow Democratic majority and some more moderate Republicans. But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced his opposition to the bill on Wednesday morning, in what could be a death knell for bipartisan efforts to create a commission. Roy Exum: Two Must Reads Today Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - by Roy Exum Roy Exum My daily habit is to search a good many Internet sites that I enjoy, trying to find stories that relate to my many interests and cast light on things I think about. I care a great deal about the Children of God, and I am one among many who monitor today’s stories. Yesterday I found two examples of what I love to share. The first is about Israel and it is an easy given that I love cheering on my champions. The Jesus I follow was the tenderest Jew who ever lived and all of my life I have lived in gratitude for the grace of my Savior.

McConnell, according to Axios’s sources, said something like: “There’s 41 of us who could change this, and I think we should.” After McConnell finished speaking, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) reportedly also stood up and questioned parts of the deal, according to the report. Blunt is retiring after his current term and will not run for reelection. One source told Axios the deal is not dead on arrival but hinted Republicans would want to make some changes such as making a “truly bipartisan” panel.
