WASHINGTON
The top Democratic and Republican members of the House Homeland Security Committee have reached an agreement on legislation to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The measure had stalled amid partisan differences.
Under the terms of the agreement announced Friday, the commission would have an equal number of Democrats and Republicans, five from each party. It would have subpoena power and be charged with issuing a final report by Dec. 31, along recommendations to prevent future attacks.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the legislation could be considered by the House “as soon as next week,” along with a spending bill to pay for security improvements to the Capitol. A week ago, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff and U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh toured a Memphis Job Corps center to tout President Joe Biden s $2.3 trillion infrastructure bill.
If they had waited a week, they could have stood on the banks of the Mississippi River and pointed at the Hernando DeSoto Bridge.
The crack discovered Tuesday that could keep the key river crossing closed for weeks, or longer, offered an opportunity for the Biden administration to keep pushing its infrastructure plan, locally and nationally. For Memphis, the fracture on the bridge highlighted the needs in a community economically dependent on its infrastructure.

GOP lawmakers have chosen Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York as the No. 3 Republican in the House, anointing a Trump loyalist to a leadership position charged with delivering party messaging.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced her election in a tweet.
