May 8, 2021 Share Conservatives in and out of Congress are expressing opposition to Rep. Elise Stefanik ’s rise toward House Republicans’ No. 3 leadership job, grumbling that’s unlikely to derail her but serves notice that the right wing is battling again to affect the party’s future. House Republicans plan to meet privately next week, probably Wednesday, and seem certain to oust Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from that top post. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., seems likely to postpone a vote on replacing Cheney until sometime later, according to two House GOP aides who discussed the delay on condition of anonymity, giving restive conservatives a chance to coalesce behind an alternative.

The Republican lawmaker was asked directly by Fox New host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday whether he supports Ms Stefanik for the third-ranking Republican role in the House of Representatives. “Yes, I do,” he said. It marks the first time he has publicly supported Ms Stefanik for the position, after he reportedly was caught on a hot mic telling Fox & Friends that he “lost confidence” in Ms Cheney and has “had it with her” following Ms Cheney’s criticisms of her party’s embrace of Donald Trump’s “stolen” election myth.

Liz Cheney: Republicans take sides in movement to oust her

Any leader who is not focused on pushing back against the radical and dangerous Biden agenda needs to be replaced, Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., told Fox News Sunday. when asked about his reasoning for opposing her leadership. Banks is chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the largest GOP caucus in Congress. Since taking control of the caucus in 2021, Banks has sought to build a larger messaging platform and court influence with fellow Republicans. The Indiana Republican has made no secret that he is interested in replacing Cheney as conference chair. “The most natural comparison to RSC chair is conference chair, Banks said during an interview with Politico. And that’s something I think I would really enjoy because it’s what I’m doing now.”
