SAFFORD – After more than 34 years of work on achieving a new police department, law enforcement, dignitaries, friends, family, and the general public celebrated the opening of the new Safford Police Department on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting and open house.
The event began with a flag-raising with bugle accompaniment, and a moment of silence led by Safford Police Chief Glen Orr, who said it was for the Reed family – who lost 4-year-old Maci Reed to flash flooding in Pima recently – and “all victims” the officers work for each day.
Orr recalled walking into the former Sheriff’s Office at the start of his career in the same location more than 30 years ago.

A San Diego law enforcement task force on Tuesday arrested a 31-year-old substitute teacher and summer camp instructor on suspicion of possessing child pornography, and detectives were searching for possible victims.
Andrew Jared Primes has worked for the Poway Unified School District and San Dieguito Union High School District, according to the San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Primes also serves as a lead/instructor for a Boys Scouts of America summer camp at Fiesta Island.
“Because of the suspect’s proximity and involvement with children, detectives are looking for potential victims,” Sgt. Garric Nugent, who oversees the task force, said in a statement.
Jack Cooper was one of the first non-male scouts to join Scouting BSA in 2019 and attained Eagle Scout in 22 months. Troop 158 celebrated Jack s accomplishment at a Court of Honor on July 27.
BLACKSBURG â Mothers like Kristie Cooper have for decades supported their sons in Boy Scouts of America, but until recently none of them could introduce their daughter as an Eagle Scout.
That began to change on Feb. 1, 2019, when the century-old youth organization allowed female youth to join its troops across the country and in Southwest Virginia. And on Tuesday, Kristie celebrated both a son and a daughter becoming Eagles and spoke at a ceremony honoring them both.

Add becoming a drone pilot to the long list of accomplishments Boy Scouts can claim through the program. Boy Scouts of America is an FAA-approved test administrator and can facilitate the process for members who are old enough. “Flying drones is a fun way Scouts can start learning about robotics, science, technology and engineering,” said Eagle Scout and scouting blogger Bryan Wendell. “Many camps already offer drone-flying programs.”
Leaders help Scouts go through the FAA TRUST program and make sure the knowledge testing and paperwork get done properly. Boy Scouts has also drafted its own list of safety guidelines to supplement the FAA material. Chief among those is application of the “Sweet 16 of BSA Safety” that applies to all Scout activities. Although there is an aviation merit badge, there doesn’t appear to be one for drone pilots.
