Readers respond: Walden’s spotty environmental record Updated Jan 11, 2021; On his way out the congressional door, Greg Walden surprisingly proclaimed his environmental accomplishments, from supporting Mount Hood wilderness, the Steens Mountain Protection Act enacted over 20 years ago and removal of the Savage Rapids and Chiloquin dams (“Reflecting on 30 years of public service,” Jan. 3). He neglected to mention his longstanding opposition to the removal of the Klamath River dams, despite their lacking the navigation and flood control benefits he touted, and despite support for dam removal by the federal licensee, PacifiCorp. Walden also failed to mention his opposition to the efforts of both Oregon’s senators to protect the Owyhee Canyonlands and his consistent support for increased logging of federal forests at the expense of environmental laws and public participation.  He depicted himself as a moderate environmentalist, despite a lifetime League of Conservation Voter

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Oregon in 1963, married her husband Jimmie in 1964 and raised four boys. She worked nine years as a tour guide at Alpenrose Dairy starting in 1977 and then was a substitute teacher for the Beaverton school district for 19 years. Kim spent 4,300+ hours volunteering at the Lan Su Chinese Garden starting in 2000. She died of COVID-19 related complications.

Klamath City School Dist spreads holiday cheer amongst students and families

KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. Many families and students in the Klamath City School District received food donations and gifts last week from school staff and their respective communities. The school district says that 30 families in Bonanza had goodies delivered to them by staff, who loaded 3 trucks full of food boxes and gifts. Schools in Chiloquin provided 63 holiday dinner baskets to families – with every elementary student receiving a wrapped gift, a gingerbread house kit, a hygiene bag and more. KCSD also says students and families from Henley Middle School have been visited by ‘outdoor Santa’, who’s been giving out elk pepperoni, steaks and sausages for holiday meals.
