You may not pay much attention to the appearance of your nails. Even if you regularly treat yourself to mani-pedis, you may miss out on symptoms of a deadly health threat, one that may lurk right beneath the polish.
That menace may be a tumor. Found right under nail plates, these lesions can develop on your fingers and toes. And, while they don’t get the kind of notoriety other bodily tumors do, they too can be benign or cancerous malignant with any of several types of cancer, in fact. As such, these tumors can vary in appearance and size.
New tests may help improve the selection of men considering prostate cancer surveillance
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers are looking at ways to combine imaging and biomarkers to predict prostate cancer progression more accurately. The study was part of an NCI-funded prospective trial of men who are monitoring their prostate cancer in a management process called active surveillance. Results were recently published in the
Journal of Urology.
Some prostate cancers grow slowly and are unlikely to result in any long-term consequence. As a result, many men with prostate cancer are at risk for overtreatment and related side effects. As a result, active surveillance has emerged as an increasingly popular option for the management of prostate cancer.

Liver transplant priority in the U.S. goes to the sickest patients, which fails to consider other important factors, including how long patients are likely to survive post-transplant.
Researchers with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are collaborating with faculty at the University of Pennsylvania to develop a risk score that more comprehensively prioritizes liver cancer patients for transplantation.
Their paper documenting the development and validation of the LiTES-HCC score to predict post-transplant survival for hepatocellular carcinoma, or liver cancer, patients was published in the highly respected peer-reviewed
Journal of Hepatology.
