Health Canada may approve favipiravir to treat COVID-19 By Charlie Pinkerton. Published on Dec 21, 2020 11:31am Health Canada s Ottawa offices (Jolson Lim/iPolitics)
Health Canada is now reviewing favipiravir, an antiviral medication, to use as a treatment for patients with COVID-19.
Favipiravir was developed as an antiviral medication for patients suffering from the influenza virus, according to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. It was first approved for use against the flu in Japan in 2014.
Studies suggest it may be effective in preventing the replication of other viruses, including Ebola. Favipavir is believed to work similarly to remdesivir, which was the first drug approved by Health Canada to treat COVID-19, by blocking the enzyme that’s crucial to the virus replicating inside someone’s cells.
