The Danish Red Cross (DRC) Country Office for Niger is placed in Niamey at Niger Red Cross Society’s headquarter. We are a team of four people at the delegation, and with close contacts to the other Red Cross Delegations that have their offices in the same building. The DRC Country Team contributes to the implementation of DRC’s International Strategy and on a daily basis works closely with Niger Red Cross Society (NRC) on planning, designing, executing and monitoring longer term development projects as well as response projects in Niger.
The Country Team provides guidance and advice to NRC project staff and makes sure the projects are in line with overall strategies as well as Red Cross principles. Fundraising and writing proposals for new project funding is also part of our work. Venezuela – Continued armed confrontations at the border with Colombia (DG ECHO Partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 29 April 2021)

Since 23 of April, at least three major attacks took place near the town La Victoria, allegedly by the dissident 10th front of the ex-Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), targeting Venezuelan military helicopters, special forces and river patrols.
Media reports include possible death of some nine Venezuelan Special Forces and some other 27 soldiers who were ambushed. The Ministry of Defence of Venezuela has not provided numbers of dead and wounded, but has confirmed that identification of the corpses is ongoing.
Persistent violence and insecurity will most certainly increase the refugee influx to Colombia and delay any potential return of Venezuelans willing to get back home. Up to now, partners report more than 6,000 people have crossed to Colombia (including 500 children) and at least 1,500 children are affected within Venezuela
Mission Context
FRC has been present in the MENA region since 2003, in support to its partners the hosts national societies. Water Sanitation, livelihood and emergency response activities have been in majority developed within the regional response. Currently active in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria, FRC plans to extend its field of action with Disaster Risk Management components representing a major challenge for the whole region. FRC possess a significant expertise in this sector and so this strategic axis has been prioritized in the region to develop new actions.
A staff fully dedicated to this central theme will allow FRC to support our partners and vulnerable populations. The regional post will also allow to ensure coherence between all of the proposed activities et ensure close and adapted monitoring.
