MADISON, Wis. – The brutal cold lining up with the Christmas holidays means homeless shelters will have their work cut out for them.
This year, the challenges have been piling on. Stephen Heck, director of operations and development at the Salvation Army in Madison, said they’ve seen a big increase in need in the community.
“Now you have cold temperatures, that adds another layer of need,” Heck said, adding that cold weather brings more people seeking homelessness services.
“Oh absolutely, then put it on top of Christmas,” Heck said. “We were already twice the number of single women at our shelter and already at capacity at hotels, so it’s a challenge. We’re up for the challenge.”

HERKIMER, N.Y. – The owners of two local businesses have stepped up to help the Herkimer Salvation Army raise funds during the annual Red Kettle Campaign this holiday season.
The Salvation Army has only raised 18% of its $35,000 goal this year, and is 65% behind where donations were at this time last year. The lack of donations is attributed mostly to the coronavirus pandemic, which has left many families strapped for cash and left the Salvation Army without as many volunteers this year.

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – With only two days to go, the Sheboygan Salvation Army is hopeful that its Red Kettle Campaign goal of $150,000 can at least be approached. Carrye Jo Cony is the Development Director for the Sheboygan post, and says things have picked up over the past week. Last Tuesday, the kettles had only collected 25% of the goal, but as of Tuesday, that had doubled to 50%. And Cony said that considering the drive started before Thanksgiving, the current pace is gratifying.
Christmas Eve is typically one of the best days for the bell ringers, but Cony said that all depends upon whether there are enough people manning the stations, and volunteer signups will be accepted through today.
