Community reacts to Hattiesburg municipal precinct changes Community reacts to Hattiesburg municipal precinct changes By Melissa Rademaker | February 22, 2021 at 6:44 PM CST - Updated February 23 at 10:47 AM HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg City Council voted last week to change the location for three voting precincts for the upcoming municipal elections. This change affects Wards 1, Ward 2 and Ward 4. Longtime Mobile-Bouie neighborhood resident Melvin Williams welcomes the change. “Number one, we’re proud that it’s a precinct because it’s the future home of the Civil Rights Museum,” Williams said of the change to the Eureka School Precinct. “So what better place to become a precinct than a Civil Rights Museum. And then second of all, it’s the convenience. You know most of the people that vote at this precinct live in this community.”

State Senate bill could politicize the Department of Archives and History

Illustration by Katherine Butler. A new Senate bill could change the formation of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s nine-member board of trustees, transforming it from a self-appointed board to a politician-appointed one. Senate Bill 2727 would allow the governor and lieutenant governor to alternate in appointing new MDAH trustees every six years, which would then be approved of or rejected by the Senate. Currently, members are nominated by the MDAH Board of Trustees itself and confirmed by the Senate. The bill has already passed through the Senate at a 34-14 vote and is currently on its way to the House of Representatives.
