Mace and Morgan Sindall join value-based construction pilot

More than 20 firms including Mace, Morgan Sindall and Mott MacDonald have signed up to the pilot phase of the government’s Value Toolkit, which aims to help clients make decisions based on the overall value that could be delivered by a construction project. The toolkit, alongside the government’s Construction Playbook, is designed to encourage construction projects to deliver better environmental, social and economic outcomes. The initiative also aim to prompt public sector clients to see beyond the cheapest tender option when evaluating bids for new work. Construction minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “Bringing together knowledge from over 200 experts from across government and industry, this toolkit will make it easier to determine the social and environmental benefits of the decisions made by firms in the construction sector, helping it continue its drive to cut emissions and build back better from the pandemic.”

UK needs immediate programme of rail electrification to hit net zero goals

The UK needs a programme of rail electrification to be implemented “immediately” in order to meet its revised net zero commitments, according to 17 rail industry bodies, businesses and campaign groups. An open letter to transport secretary Grant Shapps says that it “will be impossible to decarbonise rail without further electrification”. The calls for electrification come after the government committed to reducing the UK’s carbon emissions by 78% by 2035. The letter is accompanied by a new report Why Rail Electrification? which sets out why – even with the development of clean new technologies like battery and hydrogen trains – the industry will be unable to decarbonise the rail network to the extent required without significant further electrification.

UK must begin immediate rail electrification to hit net-zero goals

More than a dozen rail bodies have written to transport minister Grant Shapps urging the government to begin an immediate programme of rail electrification to help the UK achieve its climate ambitions. In an open letter to Shapps, the group has claimed that the UK is at a ‘critical juncture’ in its aim to reduce carbon emissions. Recent analysis by Network Rail found that up to 13,000 single-track kilometres, or 450km per year, needs to be electrified by 2050 for the rail network to be decarbonised. In 2019/20, only 251km of track was electrified. The industry bodies also warn that the industry would lose the skills needed to deliver electrification works unless a new programme was put in place.
