“We have suffered from numerous conflicts and it is important for us to know how to resolve these amicably, especially disagreements with nomadic herders,” says Anyisa Pagan Amum.
Mr. Amum was speaking at an UNMISS-facilitated peace forum held in Kodok, Upper Nile state, where more than 30 representatives from civil society organizations, women, youth and traditional leaders came together to discuss building social cohesion, reconciliation and harmony among local communities here.
Kodok, located within Fashoda county, was devastated by the civil war which took place in South Sudan in 2013. Many people fled their homes at the time, but now with a peace deal and a transitional government of national unity in place, they are slowly returning to their families and beginning the painstaking process of rebuilding their lives.

UNMISS peacekeepers in Cueibet continue to mitigate conflict and build confidence

“As a mission, our primary goal has always been to prevent violence breaking out and to protect civilians when needed,” says David Shearer, the top United Nations envoy in South Sudan and head of the peacekeeping operation, UNMISS.
“We’re currently in the middle of the dry season here,” he continues. “It’s always a tricky time because nomadic herders start moving their livestock to find grazing land and water. This cross-country movement creates tensions with those farming settled lands. Herders sometimes allow cattle to graze on cultivated crops and farmers retaliate to protect their resources which can lead to conflict, loss of life and displacement,” reveals SRSG Shearer.
UNMISS hosts peace event in Warrap, urges communities to opt for dialogue instead of conflict

To counter the effects of continuing tensions and outbreaks of intercommunal conflict in the greater Tonj area of Warrap state, UNMISS Civil Affairs recently organized a peace campaign in Ngapagok payam (administrative division) located in Tonj east.
The event, which included awareness-raising on peaceful reconciliation, the need for social cohesion and the role of the peacekeeping mission in building durable peace across South Sudan, was attended by hundreds of community members.
