Two skiers from Ashland were caught in an avalanche near Etna Summit at the southwestern edge of Siskiyou County on Wednesday. The Siskiyou County Sheriff s Office confirms that one of the skiers did not survive. The Sheriff s Office said that the two friends were back-country skiing in a very remote area near Etna Summit, on federal forest land. Both were equipped for the weather and the terrain, but were swept up in an avalanche on Wednesday afternoon.

The person’s name is being withheld until their family can be notified, according to Lt. Chris Betts in a press release from the Yreka Police Department. The driver of the vehicle was a 43-year-old Siskiyou County woman who was not injured, YPD said. After being called to the scene just before 6:30 p.m., officers found the pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway. Medical personnel were unable to revive the pedestrian, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene, Betts said in the release.

Two suspects are behind bars after allegedly attacking a person during a home invasion robbery in Northern California. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said on the morning of December 27, two men kicked in a person’s door at a home in the Hornbrook area. They reportedly sprayed the one person inside the home with bear mace and started kicking him while he was on the ground. According to the sheriff’s office, the mace affected the suspects, who reportedly retreated outside momentarily. While they were out of the home, the victim fled through a window to safety.

Suspects Steven Charles Ferea, 47, of Castro Valley, and Corey Matthew Boatman, 31, of Stockton were later found in the area with a brand new cell phone, a chainsaw, a generator and several other items identified as stolen from the home, said the Siskiyou County Sheriff s Office, which is still investigating the crime.
