Severe illnesses, infections spreading rapidly through King County homeless camps Matt Markovich, KOMO News Reporter Shigella bacteria spreading rapidly through King County homeless camps Replay Video There’s a nastiness spreading through homeless camps in King County.  It’s a bacterium called shigella and can lead to an infection called shigellosis, which can leave a person helpless with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. “We continue to see people experiencing homelessness with shigella, co-infected with other fecal-oral pathogens such as crypto and diuretic E.coli” says the Director of Seattle/King County Public Health Patty Hayes. Antibiotics can shorten the duration of the illness says the Centers for Disease Control, but the people are being infected don’t have immediate access to a doctor.
