China food safety alerts: Warnings and directives for fermented foods, counterfeit foods and beverages issued by government By Pearly Neo The Chinese government has issued a series of warnings and directives on the consumption of fermented foods, counterfeit foods and beverages on the back of a deadly mass food poisoning event and the rapid rise of food fraud cases in the past year.
All the warnings and directives were issued by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), with particular emphasis on the safety of fermented foods due to a lethal mass food poisoning case in Heilongjiang province last year where nine members of a single family died after eating homemade suantangzi (fermented corn noodles).
China-based mobile apps pose threats to security

US Representative Michael McCaul, the ranking member of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, on Jan. 23 urged US President Joe Biden to follow through on an election pledge to deal with the security risk posed by TikTok.
Biden told reporters on a campaign stop in Minnesota on Sept. 18 last year that TikTok was “a matter of genuine concern,” and that as president, he would have Internet experts access the app.
In addition to TikTok, former US president Donald Trump expressed concern over the security risks posed by WeChat.

Huawei patent mentions use of Uighur-spotting tech

A Huawei patent has been brought to light for a system that identifies people who appear to be of Uighur origin among images of pedestrians.
The filing is one of several of its kind involving leading Chinese technology companies, discovered by a US research company and shared with BBC News.
Huawei had previously said none of its technologies was designed to identify ethnic groups.
It now plans to alter the patent.

The company indicated this would involve asking the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) - the country s patent authority - for permission to delete the reference to Uighurs in the Chinese-language document.
