Chinese authorities have often detained Turkic Muslims on the basis of overbroad crimes such as “separatism.” Ilham Tohti, a prominent Uyghur academic who ran a website providing news and information about Turkic Muslims, was prosecuted for separatism and sentenced to life in prison in 2014. Related charges include “terrorism” and “religious extremism,” which are almost always leveled against ethnic minorities such as Turkic Muslims. On April 15, the Estonian newspaper Õhtuleht published a signed article by Ambassador Li Chao entitled Xinjiang: The Truth will Outrun the Lie. Ambassador Li refutes the claims of so-called concentration camp, genocide and forced labor in Xinjiang, calling it the most preposterous lie of the century and a rumor with ulterior motives. The article emphasizes that the door of Xinjiang is always open and welcomes friends from all walks of life to visit Xinjiang to appreciate the beauty of its landscape and social harmony when the pandemic is over. The truth will eventually outrun the lie.
