US President Joe Biden’s first news conference last month offered reassuring and concerning insights regarding his administration’s approach to China.
Biden did not mention the contentious meeting in Alaska where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confronted China’s top two foreign policy officials.
The Americans implicitly affirmed the administration of former US president Donald Trump’s direct pushback against communist China’s repressive domestic governance and aggressive international behavior. Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (王毅) and Chinese Central Foreign Affairs Commission Director Yang Jiechi (楊潔篪) had explicitly demanded a return to the policies of former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

How could the Chinese delegation at the US-China summit in Anchorage, Alaska, last month possibly say that “the United States does not have the qualification to say that…”?
As it turns out, one factor that accounts for this statement is overconfidence, and the other is an impression of the administration of US President Joe Biden as soft.

Beijing euphemistically refers to the camps as “re-education centers,” but evidence shows that their purpose, in addition to brainwashing inmates, is to provide the authorities with a vast pool of forced labor.
The world has reacted in shock as evidence of the camps’ existence and scale has gradually come to light, and several well-known Western brands have issued statements stating that they do not use “Xinjiang cotton” in their products and expressing concern over reports of human rights violations in the region.
