China car sales hit by global chip shortage Sales of new cars fell sharply in China last month as the global semiconductor shortage put the brakes on the recovery from the downturn caused by the pandemic. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said on Friday that 2.01 million vehicles were sold in June. That was down by 12.4 percent from the same month last year. It was the second straight month of decline. Sales were down by 3.1 percent in May from a year ago. Sales of new passenger vehicles fell 11.1 percent as the chip shortage undercut output.
