KILIFI COUNTY, Kenya (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Wearing a crown of cowry shells and traditional regalia, Hillary Mwatsuma intoned a prayer to the ancestors who have been laid to rest in Kaya Kauma, one of 45 sacred forested villages scattered along Kenya’s southern coast, since the 16th century.
The thick canopy encircling the ancient kayas, or villages, once shielded the Mijikenda community against attacks from enemy tribes, until the residents moved downhill into nearby villages in the 1940s.
Today, the 200km (124 miles) of kaya forests are protected as the ancestral homes of the Mijikenda, while the trees help the community escape the worst effects of climate change, such as flooding and landslides.
Nigeria Abandons Chinese Financing for Railroad Project

Premium Times of Nigeria reported Friday that the Nigerian government has decided not to borrow any more money from China for railroad construction, apparently because the Nigerians are growing nervous about their $3.4 billion in debt to Chinese banks and were reluctant to add another $14.4 billion to complete several large railroad projects.
“We’ve moved away from China in some of our projects,” Nigerian Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi said last week, adding that the finance ministry is seeking alternative funding arrangements with Standard Chartered, a British-based multinational finance company that has been doing business in Nigeria for 22 years.
