Zhan Qingyuan was among the first batch of physicians sent to Wuhan early in 2020 when the city was grappling with the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zhan, the chief physician for the Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing, recalled his experience in the virus-hit Wuhan, capital city of Central China s Hubei province, in an exclusive interview with China Daily website.
As details unfolded about how the China-Japan Friendship Hospital was mobilized to support Wuhan city, Zhan recounted the ordinary yet resilient local people in hard times.

Expert says no mistakes were allowed during delicate treatment procedure
It wasn t the first time that Zhan Qingyuan-a 51-year-old expert in respiratory diseases-had handled a patient in critical condition, but this one was different.
Zhan had been sent from Beijing s China-Japan Friendship Hospital to Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, Hubei province, in February last year to fight in the frontline battle against the COVID-19 outbreak.

The study of more than 1,700 patients treated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the original epicenter of the pandemic, shows 76% suffered at least one symptom months after they were discharged from hospital.
