Zhan Qingyuan was among the first batch of physicians sent to Wuhan early in 2020 when the city was grappling with the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zhan, the chief physician for the Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing, recalled his experience in the virus-hit Wuhan, capital city of Central China s Hubei province, in an exclusive interview with China Daily website.
As details unfolded about how the China-Japan Friendship Hospital was mobilized to support Wuhan city, Zhan recounted the ordinary yet resilient local people in hard times.
Most patients hospitalized with COVID-19 have at least one symptom six months after falling ill, according to findings from a study in Wuhan, China, where the novel coronavirus first emerged in late 2019.

Expert says no mistakes were allowed during delicate treatment procedure
It wasn t the first time that Zhan Qingyuan－a 51-year-old expert in respiratory diseases－had handled a patient in critical condition, but this one was different.
Zhan had been sent from Beijing s China-Japan Friendship Hospital to Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, Hubei province, in February last year to fight in the frontline battle against the COVID-19 outbreak.

The study of more than 1,700 patients treated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the original epicenter of the pandemic, shows 76% suffered at least one symptom months after they were discharged from hospital.
